What is an Exercise Physiologist?

An Exercise Physiologist is a university-trained health professional who specialises in the science of movement and exercise. They use personalised exercise programs to help manage and prevent chronic diseases, injuries, and conditions like diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, or back pain. EPs are experts in understanding how exercise can improve your health and quality of life. Lets look into what an example session might include:

  • Full physical assessment including what you are able to lift, push, pull, carry and even squeeze! This also includes assessing your mobility, a cardiovascular assessment and how far you can stretch.
  • The exercise Physiologist will then start some exercises with you that are best aligned to help you with your weaknesses. 
  • Exercises might include step ups, walking, weights and dumb bells, floor pilates, reformer pilates work, medicine ball activities, swiss ball activities or even just gentle stretch band exercises. 
  • You will complete your session with a fresh drink of water, a new program and a link to an app to track and follow your program on your phone or online.
