Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy

Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy

Musculoskeletal physiotherapy is the treatment of pain associated with muscles and joints of the body. We first need to assess and diagnose the cause. Below are conditions related to the musculoskeletal system, their possible cause, the treatment and solution by the Physiotherapist, and the expected prognosis so that you can make a better assumption of what to expect with your recovery.

Possible Cause and/or Origin

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Facet Joint arthropathies
  • Nerve root compression
  • Lumbopelvic dissociation or assymetries
  • Sacroiliac joint pain- also related to pregnancy

Treatment by Physiotherapist

  • Traction
  • Passive accessory intervertebral movements and glides
  • Passive Physiological intervertebral movements and glides
  • Nerve root glides and stretches
  • Lumbopelvic dissociation exercises and home exercise programs
  • Taping and de-loading techniques
  • Manipulations as required for increased hypomobility and stiffness

Prognosis

Improvement after 1st session. Managing LBP after 5 sessions of Physiotherapy

Possible Cause and/or Origin

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Whiplash associated disorder
  • Deep neck flexor instability
  • Wry neck
  • Facet joint or intervertebral hypomobility

Treatment by Physiotherapist

  • Traction
  • Passive accessory intervertebral movements and glides
  • Passive Physiological intervertebral movements and glides
  • Nerve root glides and stretches
  • Lumbopelvic dissociation exercises and home exercise programs
  • Taping and de-loading techniques
  • Manipulations as required for increased hypomobility and stiffness
  • Traction
  • Passive accessory intervertebral movements and glides
  • Passive Physiological intervertebral movements and glides
  • Nerve root glides and stretches
  • Lumbopelvic dissociation exercises and home exercise programs
  • Taping and de-loading techniques
  • Manipulations as required for increased hypomobility and stiffness

Prognosis

Improvement after 1st session. Managing LBP after 5 sessions of Physiotherapy

Possible Cause and/or Origin

  • Primary or secondary impingement
  • Subacromial bursitis
  • Rotator cuff pathology i.e. tears, strains, poor biomechanics:
    • Supraspinatus
    • Inrfaspinatus
    • Teres minor and major

Treatment by Physiotherapist

  • Electrotherapy including:
    • TENS including Compex machines (trans electrocutaneous nerve stimulation)
    • Ultrasound (high frequency sound waves, pulsed or continuous)
    • LASER Therapy
    • Interferential Therapy
  • Dry Needling or Western Acupuncture:
    • This can be used for two effects including (1.) increasing circulation to an area to facilitate the clearance of inflammation and (2.) Releasing a trigger point or shortened muscle via way of creating an action potential that will trigger a muscle contraction and break the cross bridges that are holding the muscle in a shortened postion.
  • Heat
  • Massage

Prognosis

Improvement after 1st session. Managing LBP after 5 sessions of Physiotherapy

Possible Cause and/or Origin

  • Labral tears
  • Trachanteric bursitis
  • Piriformis syndrome
  • High hamstring strains
  • Gluteus medius tendonitis
  • Snapping Hip
  • Osteoarthritis and femoral acetabular impingement

Treatment by Physiotherapist

  • Electrotherapy including:
    • TENS including Compex machines (trans electrocutaneous nerve stimulation)

Possible Cause and/or Origin

  • Meniscal pain
  • patellofemoral pain or knee cap (extensor mechanism)
  • Lateral ITB (iliotibial band syndrome)
  • Suprapatella and infrapatella tendonopathies
  • Fat pad impingement
  • osgood schlatters
